Antique George Jones Majolica Ware – 1873

Description

This is an extremely rare Antique Victorian George Jones Majolica Thatched Bee Skep Cheese Dish. This stunning Cheese Dish measures 9 7/8″ square at the base and is 3 1/4″ to the top of the dish. The Thatched Skep dome measures 10 5/8″ for a total height of 13 7/8″. The Dish features a  7 1/2″ diameter and 1 1/2″ deep bowl for displaying Cheese. The inside of the Dish is glazed in Pale Turquoise and the body of the base is glazed in Jones’ classic Brown/Green Tortoise Shell, including the underside. The Thatched Bee Skep dome is glazed with Ivory colored ‘thatch’ and covers a Yellow Green Bee Hive with Pale Turquoise on the inside. The condition is very good especially given the age of this piece. There are a few tiny nicks, a small crack, a visible chip and a slight repair (see photos), but overall the condition is superb. It is not unusual for George Jones pieces of this era to require minor repairs.  This piece is date stamped with an incised English Diamond Registration mark both inside the Lid and on the underside of the base. Piece is dated October 1873.
